Willem Strydom

Willie was born in Johannesburg in 1951. The first evidence of an artistic inclination was noticed in his primary school days, when he was always sketching anything that tickled his fancy. In high school one of his subjects would be art, and his first oil painting to this day has the pride of place in his mom’s room and was of a dog resting on a sofa.

After he matriculated he attended art school at the Pretoria Technikon where he studied graphic design and fine arts. He was then called up to do his stunt in Angola, on his return he was employed at a drawing office of an engineering firm for 12 years. In his spare time he was still painting the odd landscape here and there, most of which were purchased by family and friends.

He then moved to the Natal South Coast and started a kitchen & build-in cupboard factory with his brother, Dawie. After 15 years in the business Willie decided to concentrate on his God given talents and started painting full time. It is remarkable, indeed, how more at peace within himself he has become, since he made this decision. The family has been amazed at the amount and quality of the work he has been able to produce in a short time. He now aims to establish himself in the art world and is at present exploring every avenue in this regard. After attending a 4 day workshop held by Rob Wareing, he was assured by the artist that he had the talent to make a success of his art.

Willie has displayed the determination of a man that knows what his goal in life is, and how to get there. His most recent work is done in oil and acrylic on canvas, and Willie loves the vibrant color this versatile mediums gives him. Willie’s colorful interpretations of life have found their way into galleries and private collections all over South Africa. He is also commissioned every year by a Commercial Bank to paint paintings of vintage Ford cars for their annual price giving.

This artist draws inspiration from his country and its history, especially from the old district six and the Bo-Kaap. His spontaneous response to the canvas while painting is reflected in the freshness and happiness of his art. Willie is also available for workshops and art classes.

Willie has had many group exhibitions and was very successful in all of them.
